It’s gonna be a barkin‘ good time at this year’s Walk & Wag, but with the event much closer to Halloween this fourth time around, expect many more tricks and treats (for both dogs and their owners). The day kicks off with simultaneous 5K and 10K races at 9 a.m., with prizes for runners in various categories, plus prizes for the first three runners to cross the finish line wearing a Halloween costume. “Last year, one of the guys who won came as a fire hydrant,” says Walk & Wag director Alise Cortez. “How perfect is that at a dog event?” The day continues with a 2K dog walk at 9:10 a.m., then a festival full of live music, arts and crafts booths, food vendors (such as Ben and Jerry’s and Chipotle), and costume contests for various age groups and species. One of the highlights is the dog and owner look-alike contest, this year judged by spoof “American Idle” panelists. Children can bring their hollow plastic pumpkins and trick-or-treat at each of the exhibitors’ booths. Registration for the races costs $20-$30; the earlier you register, the cheaper it is. Admission to the festival, which continues until 2 p.m., costs $5 per person, child and dog. This Lakewood Service League event benefits Juliette Fowler Homes, specifically for a van to take children to their life skills development activities.
