More than $1,500 in prizes are being offered to winners of a benefit poker tournament Wednesday, Feb. 23, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, St. Anne Hall, 6311 Martel. Woodrow’s Class of 2012 (of which my youngest son is a member) is hosting the event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. with beer, wine and snacks (Italian theme); continues at 7 p.m. with poker lessons; and moves to overdrive at 7:30 p.m. when play begins. The event is expected to conclude at 10 p.m. with the awarding of the grand prize, an Apple iPad, along with other prizes.

Various door prizes also will be given away to attendees, says organizer Pat Galvin. Tickets to play are $80 in advance and $100 at the door (there will be an additional $50 buy-in for the eight finalists) and $25 for non-playing social tickets. Teachers can play for $40. To sign up, email Galvin at patrickgalvin@sbcglobal.net or call 214-207-6494. All proceeds help defray graduation costs for all students, including those who need financial assistance, along with a gift to the school from the class.
