After more than 30 years, Avila’s is looking to open a second location in Casa Linda next year through the crowdfunding website, Next Seed. As of Friday afternoon, the project had raised $21,000 from 48 investors. Owner Trent Marrs said he hopes to reach $150,000 in the remaining 88 days.

Proceeds from the NextSeed fundraiser will go toward construction, restaurant equipment, a liquor license, decor and furnishings. The total cost of the project is an estimated $500,000.

The restaurant, called Avila’s East, will be an extension of the location at 4714 Maple Ave. in Uptown. The new space in the Casa Linda Plaza would triple the size of the original and be able to serve more than 100 people, according to NextSeed.

With an outdoor patio and an additional 2,000 square feet of indoor space, Marrs said he hopes to create a community hub that could serve individuals, families and large groups for events.

“I’ve dreamt of opening my own restaurant since I was a child,” Marrs told Eater. “I want to create a hub where the diverse community of East Dallas can come any day or night of the week and know they’re getting some awesome and authentic Tex-Mex food.”

Marrs, the great-grandson of the original owner, decided to expand the eatery after its popularity soared following a 2009 episode of “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.” Customers will still be able to purchase popular dishes featured on the show, such as brisket tacos, chiles rellenos and pozole.

The success, however, was the source of a family feud that caused Richardo Avila to leave the restaurant. He later moved to Hawaii to open a bed and breakfast called AlohaHola B&B Retreat Center.
