Next Monday is the deadline for mayoral candidates to submit petitions to qualify for the May 12 election. As of Friday, just two of the 21 announced candidates have done so.

The consensus among those who are supposed to know about these things is that only about a half-dozen or so of the 21 will actually qualify for the ballot. Only that many were invited to last week’s Dallas Police Association mayoral gabfest, which didn’t include East Dallas resident Zac Crain (who is also my editor at the American Airlines in-flight magazine) and former Pleasant Grove councilman Larry Duncan.

Still, the requirements to get on the ballot aren’t all that difficult (just 473 signatures), and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a dozen or more candidates.
