An East Dallas couple bought a house near White Rock Lake recently, and although it was a neat mid-century modern house built in 1970, it had structural problems that would have been too expensive to fix. So they decided to tear it down and build something new. But before they did, they enlisted an artist friend, Val Curry, to curate an art exhibit in the house.

Seventeen artists were invited to create whatever they wanted in the house. And then the couple threw open the doors and invited everyone they know, and a lot of people they didn’t, to view the exhibit. They considered it a send off, and they think of the art on its walls as funeral garb.

“The point of the exhibit was to celebrate the house,” one of the homeowners says.

The couple welcomed anyone to enjoy the exhibit, a snack and a beverage for free, but they asked us not to use their names in this story. They received such harsh criticism from a handful of people, both for tearing down the house and putting on this avant-garde exhibit, that they don’t want publicity.
