Urbano Cafe opened for lunch last week in a tiny space near Jimmy’s Food Store on Fitzhugh. The restaurant will be open for dinner starting June 18.

The restaurant is a reinvention of Urbano Paninoteca, a popular McKinney Avenue spot that owners Kristen and Mitch Kauffman opened in 2002. The restaurant closed in December because of high rent and lagging dinner business. But the Lakewood residents decided to open something closer to home. We wrote about their concept and space in April.

Business in the new space has been good so far, Mitch Kauffman said. "It’s about what we expected. A lot of regulars are coming over here," he said. "They’re very loyal."
