Don’t you hate those days when you’re like, “Man, I’ve got $2 million, and I don’t know what to do with it.”
Alise Cortez with the Lakewood YMCA says she is on the lookout for just such a person. Last night Cortez gave an update on the YMCA progress and talked money at the Lakewood Neighborhood Association meeting at Times Ten Cellars.
So far, the YMCA has $7.5 million stashed away for the new building soon to be built at Gaston and Loving. They need $12 million for the entire project. Cortez says they need 80 percent of that $12 million pledged ($9.6 million) by the time they break ground in August, or else they will be forced to complete the project in phases.
“That means we need $2 million in the next few month; that’s what that translates to. A cool $2 million,” Cortez laughs.
Either way, in August they will start on the bulk of the project, which will cost $10 million. “We’re going to do that no matter what,” Cortez says. If they complete the facilities in phases, the colored buildings will be built first. Then, over time, they will add the two grey buildings on the left. (See the pictures below.)
If you’re confused about what building I’m talking about, let me give you a little background. The original YMCA building in the Gaston-Grand shopping center (the one next to Far West) was bought out by Lincoln Property Co. In November, Lincoln gave them a temporary location across the street while they raise money for the new facility at Gaston and Loving.
So, in all seriousness, if you have $2 mil…. or less than $2 mil… If you have ANY money you would like to donate to the YMCA, Cortez would be more than eager to talk with you. Shoot her an email at alise.cortez@sbcglobal.net.
