The Dallas Police Department’s northeast substation has a new leader in Major Yancey Nelson, and he’s already been busy in the community speaking at town halls and hosting small-group crime updates in an effort to keep neighbors informed. Now, he’s inviting residents to a Public Safety Response Symposium, where various public safety leaders will offer an inside look at ways both emergency and non-emergency calls are handled and resources are deployed.

Police Chief Daniel Comeaux will present opening remarks, and featured speakers will include Robert Uribe, assistant director of the 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center, Major Anthony Greer of the DPD, Stephen Walker, senior outreach specialist from Communications & Customer Experience/3-1-1, and Kevin Oden, director of Emergency Management and Crisis Response.

Topics will include (1) the way 9-1-1 calls are handled and dispatched, (2) the way DPD uses specialized units and technology to improve response times, (3) times when residents should use 3-1-1 for non-emergency services, and (4) the way crisis and behavioral health teams collaborate through alternative response strategies. A moderated question-and-answer format will be used, enabling direct community engagement with public safety leaders.

The symposium will be held Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Briscoe Carpenter Livestock Center, 1403 Washington Street in Fair Park. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. Enter through Gate 2, drive straight to the Pan Am Gate, and continue to the Briscoe Center.

Attendees may reserve a spot here. Attendance is free, and a light breakfast and refreshments will be provided.
