Updated 10:11 a.m. April 10: This sign has reportedly been hauled away as of April 9.
As of Good Friday morning, a digital sign reads that the White Rock Lake Trail is closed, despite the trail being reopened weeks ago after the sinkhole incident.
The sign is near the intersection of East Lawther Drive and Garland Road, by the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden bridge. It reads, “Trail closed ahead. Please turn around.”
Last month, a sinkhole appeared on the trail, and there were closures between Lawther Drive and the spillway while it was being repaired.
A Lakewood/East Dallas Advocate reader reached out on March 20 to report that the “trail closed” sign was still on. I contacted Dallas Park & Recreation for an explanation and was promptly told that the trail is still open, and department staff members were in the process of updating the sign.

The reader emailed me again almost a week later to say that the sign was still on and expressed concerns about the sign creating confusion during then-upcoming races and events. When asked and after confirming the location of the sign, the Dallas Park & Recreation spokesperson said on March 31 it would be updated “quickly” and confirmed that the trail is open.
The reader sent a photo to me before noon on April 3 showing that the sign was active.
I reached out again to the Dallas Park & Recreation spokesperson, who is looking into this issue further.
