News came in social media posts from the other ZZ Top members, Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard. They did not reveal a cause of death, only saying that Hill died in his sleep .

“We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top,'” Gibbons and Beard said in an Instagram post.

The bassist was born Joe Michael Hill in Dallas. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, and he even had an appearance in “Back to the Future Part III.”

Here’s what Hill once said about growing up in East Dallas:

I can remember walking down the street where I lived in Dallas, and I was singing because I didn’t want to really look at the surroundings, and I didn’t want to smell the air, and I didn’t want to hear what was going on, so I would sing.

But you had to know how to work your way around the neighborhood. You did and didn’t do certain things. So you don’t walk around singing or dancing. You’re liable to limp out. But playing in a rock band gives you instant cred.
