With slow sales at Kozy Kitchen during the coronavirus pandemic, the only way to save the business was to close the Lakewood location and move to a new address with lower rent and a larger customer base, the owner told the Dallas Morning News.
Kozy Kitchen is expected to open in the former Casa Komali space at 4152 Cole Ave. in Uptown by the end of July, owner Nick Pavageaux said. The brunch restaurant is headed back to Uptown, where its original location operated on McKinney Avenue for more than 15 years.
“Being a small-business owner, this is my only source of income,” Pavageaux told the Morning News. “We have to make money in order to survive through this. We’re struggling as it is, and we’re struggling more with the move. Back in Uptown, we have a very loyal following, and people are very anxious to have us back.”
Kozy Kitchen’s menu of gluten-free or low-carb items was popular with health-conscious eaters, but the restaurant failed to attract the same customer base in Lakewood, Pavageaux said.
The eatery moved into the Lakewood Shopping Center in January 2019 when its previous building sold. The space at 6400 Gaston Ave. has had trouble keeping tenants in the past. Kozy Kitchen last about a year and a half, and before that, Sugarbacon survived less than a year.
