Drive by Glencoe Park this fall to see the newest work of public art in the neighborhood.
Work on the 650-foot mural commissioned by the University Crossing Public Improvement District will begin in mid-September along the park’s retaining wall, adjacent to the U.S. 75 access road. It will span the entirety of the park from Martel to Ellsworth avenues.
A rendering of the colorful, geometric design shows that the mural will reflect the district by incorporating a mockingbird, in a nod to Mockingbird Lane, and a pony, in reference to Southern Methodist University. Neighbors might also see a bridge that looks eerily similar to the suspension bridge over Mockingbird Lane.
“It’s bold,” University Crossing Executive Director Patrick Sanders said. “We asked them to be bold. We want people to see it and say, ‘Right, I’m here.'”
University Crossing commissioned artists from EyeCon Studios to complete the mural, which will be sealed with an anti-graffiti coating. The artists are returning to the neighborhood after one of their previous works at 5 Mockingbird apartments was covered up.
The mural will take 4-6 weeks to complete, and neighbors may have the chance to help during open-painting hours on Saturday mornings, University Crossing spokeswoman Ginger Greenberg said.
“Giving University Crossing a personality is a big focus,” she said. “That’s part of building culture. Glencoe is a community builder.”
