The award-winning Woodrow show choir, Variations, will present a gala evening of music Friday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the high school’s auditorium.
The fund-raiser will help pay for the group’s trip to the Nashville Music Festival in Opryland April 25-28.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and will be available at the door. Call 841-5097 for information.
The Variations, coming off one of Woodrow’s most successful musical since 1958 – “High Button Shoes” – recently earned a number one rating in UIL competition. The group has advanced to state competition every year since its inception in 1979.
Teacher Patty Hardman says: “The arts programs at Woodrow just keep growing and growing.”
Shoes was Patty’s 19th Woodrow musical to choreograph. The stage had to be expanded to accommodate the huge chorus. The show starred Woodrow legacies Kelly Theriot and Ashley Cromeens, second-generation Wildcats; and also Knox Peden and Fox Holt, third-generation Wildcats.
Another perennial state competitor at Woodrow, the one-act play, will be presented at this month’s PTA meeting. This year’s play, “An Actor’s Nightmare”, is directed by Jim Fisher.

Our Neighborhood Prep Schools
Congratulations to the Woodrow Wilson and J.L. Long teams that placed first and second in the regional Odyssey of the mind problem-solving competition.
Also, laurels to the Long team that placed third behind St. Mark’s in the Mathcounts competition.
These successes should save Lakewood parents several grand in private school tuition. Looks like D Magazine missed something in its recent article about prep schools.
Not Tuckered Out
Woodrow grads Wallace and Doris Ethylene Tucker recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Wallace, ’42, and Doris Ethylene Smith (as she was known at Woodrow), ’40, were married on Jan. 25, 1946. They have two children and a grandson and have been sweethearts since they first met as neighbors growing up in the 5600 block of Bryan Parkway.
Wallace is retired from LTV Aerospace.
Almost Golden
Another Woodrow couple is preparing to celebrate an anniversary – their class anniversary and engagement.
Bob Verinder proposed to Jeannine Cotton the week of their graduation in June 1946. They were in the same class and married in November 1947.
The couple still lives in East Dallas and has three sons and six grandchildren.
The Verinders are working hard organizing their 50-year class reunion, to be held June 14 – 15. Please call 348-5104 for information.
