Chandra Barnett, the principal of the school, shared the news of the incident — which occurred before classes began — in a letter to Woodrow families.

“Please know the weapon never made it inside our building, and the student involved will be disciplined according to the Student Code of Conduct,” Barnett wrote in the letter.

Dallas ISD Police arrested the student “without incident,” according to the letter, and officers were on campus throughout the day.

WFAA reported that district officials do not believe the student intended to fire the gun or hurt anyone; Dallas ISD has not yet responded to the Advocate‘s request for comment.

Wednesday marked one year since the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, which left 19 children and two adults dead. Earlier this year, Woodrow students participated in a national school walk out to protest gun violence.

This isn’t the first time weapons have been found around the East Dallas school. In February 2022, Dallas police officers retrieved two weapons near campus. A month later, gun shots were fired outside campus around the end of the school day.
