Projects led by Eva Braasch and Mercedes Horton, who graduated in 2022, were completed recently, along with one led by Anna Winslow, who graduated this year.

Girl Scouts of the USA honors young women across the country each spring with the organization’s highest honor.

Braasch’s project focused on the Santa Fe Trail. With a team of volunteers, Braasch painted over a graffitied wall at the Brookside Bridge entrance of the trail. A new mural reading “Welcome to Santa Fe Trail” now stands to welcome people to the area.

Horton focused her attention on poverty and the importance of art therapy. By partnering with The Sisterhood Program at Austin Street Center, Horton led art therapy sessions for women experiencing homelessness. The project was aimed at relieving stress and discovering emotional outlets that might not have been previously explored.

Winslow partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dallas to encourage higher youth literacy rates. Along with her team of volunteers, Winslow designed and executed a new reading area with donated books, games and shelving. She hosted book club sessions when the area was finished.

Molly Fagelman, who attended Greenhill School, worked with East Dallas’ Juliette Fowler Communities to provide fidget blankets to those with Alzheimer’s. After seeing how a fidget blanket comforted her grandmother, Fagelman and her team created and donated blankets to the center.

These Girl Scout Gold Award recipients will be honored at an upcoming ceremony.
