When Bill O’Neil graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1951 and from SMU in 1955, he probably had no idea he would become one of SMU’s biggest benefactors, according to a DMN story Sunday. But that’s the case today as O’Neil, who founded what is now Investors Business Daily newspaper, has funded a chair in business journalism at the Meadows School of the Arts, a professorship in markets and freedom and established the William J. O’Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom in the Cox School of Business. O’Neil didn’t drop numbers, but his estimated donation to SMU comes in at about $6 million during the past three years. O’Neil also has purchased a building in Plano, and there’s some thought he may eventually move his businesses from Los Angeles to be a little closer to home.
