Despite its recent ā€œCā€ rating by the Texas Education Agency, Woodrow Wilson High School has continued it success in all areas of extracurricular activities this year.

The mock trial team qualified for the state competition in Dallas, March 3-4 after being victorious in the ā€œFinal Fourā€ courtroom competition Feb. 4. Members include team captain Brian Arnold, Audrey Blumenstock, TrĆ© Brown, Harrison DuBose, Hope Dobson, Joseph Orozco, Leslye Ruiz, Kala Vahle, East Walkington, Carly Williams, with understudies Natasha Johnson and Gustavo Arenas also contributing. The team is coached by Mike Buchanan, Ben DuBose, Woodrow alumni Monty Watson and Adam Greenfield, and the team sponsor is Woodrow teacher Samuel Mount.

The Wildcats girls swim team placed second overall in the regional competition this weekend. For three consecutive years, the Woodrow Wilson Aquacats are sending swimmers to the UIL Swimming and Diving State Meet. At the Region 4-5A swimming and diving championships on Feb. 3-4, the Wildcat girlsā€™ 400m freestyle relay team placed first, the girlsā€™ 200m medley relay team and 200m freestyle relay team both placed second. Caroline North placed first in the 100m backstroke and third in the 200m individual medley. Lawson Freeman placed second in the 50m freestyle swimmer. Anna Scherger got a third place in the diving competitions. These individuals qualified to compete at the state meet which will be held at the Texas Swim Center in Austin on Feb. 17-18. The 400m freestyle relay team consists of co-captains, Lawson Freeman and Caroline North, Noelle Martinez and Abbie Giles, while the 200m medley relay members are Claire and Helen Agee, Macie Burgard and Emma Elkman. The 200m freestyle relay team members are Freeman, North, Giles and Claire Agee.

The Woodrow Wilson choir was not to be outdone, and will be sending their own crew to the state competition. Last weekend, the UIL Solo and Ensemble competition took place at Townview Magnet Center in Dallas ISD. In all, 16 students and one ensemble qualified for state, which required a top score on one of their performances. The singers are Bryn Anderson, Juliette Betzer, Lauren Carlson, Madison Cunningham, Katie Dickson. Reaves Fennegan, Sophie Keller, Madeline McCulloch, Kirby McDonald, Jessica Oā€™Neal, Sophia Rogers, Piper Simon, Lauren Spellman, Sarina Starringer, Jackson Hansen and Nick Pates. The state-bound ensemble consists of Cecily Behrens, Juliette Betzer, Christina Canellos and Betsy Elam.

The Woodrow Wilson debate team took the top two spots again this weekend at the third Dallas Urban Debate Alliance (DUDA) tournament of the year. First place varsity division was won by senior Alexander Van Geenen and sophomore Jack Hill. The second place trophy went to the team of sophomores Jackson Hansen and Trace Rosenblower. Senior Lucas Rogers and sophomore Gus Teter finished fifth. Hansen also got a first-place varsity speaker award while Van Geenen earned fourth, Rogers was seventh and Rosenblower was ninth. The junior varsity team demonstrated success as well with Alec Pfundheller and Thomas Burnham placing seventh and Brandon Rivera and Willis Mendoza in 10th. Mendoz also earned second place in JV speaker awards, and Burnham finished seventh as a JV speaker. The varsity team will compete in the DUDA championships later this month.
