White Rock Center of Hope, the 30+ year-old East Dallas nonprofit, had to closed its thrift store at 10021 Garland after a weekend break in. Executive director Greg Smith says he expects it to be back up and running shortly.
“We deeply appreciate the community’s support, and are now working toward reopening our Thrift Store on Thursday,” he says.
Smith added that, “Despite this unexpected challenge, White Rock Center of Hope continued serving our community. The WRCH food pantry, clothing closet, and financial assistance programs for those facing eviction or utility disconnection have been open throughout.”
The WRCOH offers clothes, food, schools supplies, rent assistance, transportation payments and self-sufficiency programs to community members in the 75214, 75218, 75228 75223 and 75238 ZIP codes. You can schedule an appointment by calling 214.324.8996.
A Dallas Police report shows the break in was reported Sunday, Dec. 12, a little past 1 p.m. and indicates both theft and property damage.
According to this 2017 Advocate story, the center serves an average 50 people per day with the help of 150 volunteers.
The resale shop brings in some $22k per month, the group reports, so every day they can’t open is cash lost, not to mention donation drop-offs missed.
As one commenter on NextDoor.com put it, “Whoever broke into this place is the lowest of the low.”
