Last night I was fortunate enough to be invited to watch the premiere episode of the sixth season of "Project Runway" with one of the show’s contestants, Louise Black. (See her profiled in this month’s Launch. Also, confession: Black and her husband are friends of mine, though I did go through Lifetime Television promotional channels to interview her for the magazine.)

Black is a Lakewood resident, and a very, very hip chick. And sweeter than candy. She seemed at home in historic, brick-and-concrete warehouse that is now Southside on Lamar.  Unfortunately or fortunately for her, she was one of the ten contestants in the final elimination that were considered "safe". In other words she did not design one of the top three or bottom three red carpet dresses. As such, the episode was not edited to feature her; she had scant time in front of the camera. However, that means she’s still in the competition.

Twenty or so of us sat in Southside’s tiered mini-theater with a large projection screen. When Black’s face first appeared on-screen, the audience cheered, throwing up hands in celebration. Before and after the show Black mixed with friends, but she was tight-lipped about the contest, adhering to her non-disclosure agreement.

As a person who loves shorts and sandals, Black and her friends, dressed funky-cool with plenty of vintage and homemade accessories, made me feel like a shlub.
