A Portland-based karaoke business with private suites wants to open on LowerGreenville — so you won’t make a fool of yourself in front of anybody but your friends.
Voicebox Karaoke, which has locations in Portland and Denver, filed for a special use permit with the City of Dallas in January. The permit would allow the establishment to operate after midnight, which is the curfew for Lower Greenville businesses.
Late-night permits started in 2011 under District 14 Councilwoman Angela Hunt to crack down on noise and crime.
Voicebox would use the space at 1906 Greenville Ave. to expand its Asian-style karaoke concept, according to the permit. Whereas Americans have opted to sing along in public bars, performing in small private rooms has long been popular in Asia. It’s a concept that’s becoming increasingly popular in the United States.
There are several Western-style karaoke bars in East Dallas, including The Goat and One Nostalgia Tavern, but Voicebox would join only a handful of suite businesses in the city. Family Karaoke and Narazo Karaoke are both Asian-style bars located in Koreatown in Northwest Dallas.
Voicebox Karaoke has a database of nearly 16,000 English songs and a menu that reflects the neighborhood, according to the company website.
Parties book their suites online in advance and then arrive at their appointment time, according to the permit. The business would operate Thursday through Sunday with weekday hours beginning at 4 p.m. and weekend hours beginning at 2 p.m.
