A neighborhood mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service died this week, the Postal Service confirmed.

The National Association of Letter Carriers, a labor union representing U.S. Postal Service letter carriers, said in a June 22 news release that the person who died was 66-year-old Eugene Gates Jr.

Gates, who worked for the postal service for 36 years, collapsed and died in a Lakewood neighbor’s front yard on June 20, the NALC wrote. He is survived by his wife, Darla, and other family members.

“The Postal Service is deeply saddened by the loss of life suffered yesterday involving a Lakewood Post Office Letter Carrier,” the postal service said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this time.”
