Weeks ago we wrote about Elizabeth Daane, the Lakewood woman who was badly injured when a tree fell on top of her.

As reported earlier, she was feeding the neighbor’s cats when a strong gust of wind toppled the large tree. Daane pushed her two children to safety before she was pinned.

During the holiday season, her family took the time to answer, on their CaringBridge site, questions from friends about Daane’s health, such as — a tough one — will she ever walk again?

“The short (and unsatisfying) answer,” writes her husband, “is, that we don’t know.  The injury to her spine was major but the spinal cord was not severed.  Had it been severed she would have zero chance of mobility in her legs.  After surgery she did not recover any feeling in her legs and the doctors have classified her injury as a ‘complete’ injury.  An ‘incomplete’ injury would allow some feeling and recovery in areas, but as of now, she has none …we have accepted what this means but also gently hold hope for returned mobility in time.”

She is undergoing rehab and learning to get around in a wheelchair, and she spent some time at home on Christmas Eve and Christmas. The family will have to make modifications to their Pasadena Ave. home such as widening doorways and adding a ramp. Daane’s two children are reportedly handling the situation well. The family notes that they have received an incredible amount of support from the Lakewood community.
