Alums at the second annual Tim Brown/Woodrow Wilson Golf Tournament recently were talking about their kids. Rex Aymond ’70 was telling about new baby, Robin; Stacey McVey ’77 and wife Gayle Baines McVey ’80 are expecting their first child after seven years of marriage. Super mom Ginger Ehrhardt Twichell ’75 is serving as PTA President of Sanger Elementary in Forest Hills in addition to golfing and participating in triathlons.

But David Cunnif ’78 really made me feel old. His daughter, Caitlin, is in the first grade at Lakewood Elementary. He told her he also attended Lakewood.

“The school’s not that old,” she said.

More Reunion Notes

News flash! The class of 1953 has just announced a covered dish supper at Tom ’53 and Janne Haile Cody’s ’54 home June 26. Call 276-1979 to R.S.V.P. You may also call that number to reserve your place on the All-Alumni Cruise Nov. 6-13. A deposit for the Lower Caribbean sojourn must be made by July 5.

The Symbiotic Sixties

The Classes of 1963 and 1968. Camelot and Chaos. The winter of our discontent and the summer of love.

Both classes are planning reunions on the same weekend, June 25-27. The Class of ’63, which frequently has informal get-together, is planning a barbecue and dance, says organizer Carolyn Knox, 349-4733. Others pitching in are Sewell Cadillac manager and former SMU and Woodrow football star Jerry Griffin, and North Dallas Bank president Darrell Wooten.

The Class of ’68 will go to Q Grill (next to classmate Jo Hensley Barr’s Lakewood Theater), then to the White Rock Pump station for a picnic and will venture up to Southfork Ranch for a dance Saturday night.

Call Dinah DeWitt Gaspard, 821-1234; Jolynn Nelson Bennett, 341-9920, or Steve Yarbrough, 368-1097.

Johnny Be Good

Don’t forget the Class of 1958 reunion, June 18-19. Call Guy Trigg (406-0268), another Tim Brown golfer. Being 1958 vintage myself, I know it was a very good year.

Those Fabulous Forties

Classes ’48 and ’43 returned to the shrine Woodrow for part of their 45th and 50th reunions in May. The Class of ’48’s alums included Channel 4’s Walter Evans; football legend and Realtor Herschel Forester (Forester Field is named for his dad, a legendary Woodrow football coach); tennis star and Hall of Famer Nancy Neeld Armor; Wilson Engraving head Eugene Green; heroic pilot of the United Airlines crash near Sioux City, Iowa, Al Haynes; and Dr. Charles Key of opthalmological fame.

Alumni Spirit Passed to ’93

On May 16, alumni returned to participate in the Passing of the Woodrow Spirit candlelight ceremony at the Baccalaureate services at East Dallas Christian Church.

Representing the ’20s was Howard Holloway ’29. Dorothy Caldwell Traynor ’38, Student Council vice-president and Trinity University-bound Laura Johnson’s grandmother, stood in for the ’30s. Her son and Laura’s father, Mark Johnson, graduated in 1965. Wayne Addington (representing the ’40s), is the grandfather of Kyle Jarrell, heading to Texas-San Antonio. Kyle’s father is Jim Jarrell ’72.

You might recognize the name from the appliance distributor of the same name with the atomic neon sign on Fondren, just off North Central Expressway.

Woodrow grad and office/computer education teacher at Woodrow since 1969. Ruth Hudspeth Struble, represented the 1950s.

James Ostler ’60 passed the spirit to his daughter, Jennifer. She serves as parliamentarian of her class and is going to LSU this fall. She also played golf for Woodrow as did her father, an all-state choice for three years. Mother Judy helped organize the hectic array of senior activities.

Representing the ’80s was Abel Gonzales ’80, who was treasurer of his class. His sister, Sophia, is vice-president of the Class of ’93.

Yvonne Compton ’92, one of many Comptons to pass through Woodrow, designated the ’90s. Sister Erica is corresponding secretary of the senior class. What a job you have ahead of you, Erica!
