The German grocery chain Aldi has begun construction on its new distribution center in Denton, which will serve 25 planned stores in the Dallas area. One confirmed location is the corner of Gaston and North Haskell avenues.

An Aldi spokeswoman in Chicago said the distribution center would be complete in January. That means the discount food retailer will join Whole Foods and New Flower Market in serving East Dallas when it opens in March 2010.

Aldi, which is one of the world’s biggest grocery chains with about 8,500 stores, confirmed in December that it would build the East Dallas store. Aldi stores are about the size of Walgreens stores and offer about a quarter of the food items of a typical supermarket, but at deep discounts.
