Forty-seven years later, and many of the houses on Bryan Parkway still stand.
Today’s Throwback Thursday comes from the G. William Jones Film and Video Collection at SMU and shows a Channel 8 News clip of the houses on the 6200 block of Bryan Parkway dated January 23, 1974.
The video talks about the transformation the neighborhood underwent in just a few years in the early 1970s. The yards that were once “filled with junk cars and broken-down refrigerators” are green and spacious. Many young couples were drawn to the neighborhood to renovate homes.
“East Dallas is attracting young professionals who don’t want to live in suburbia and can’t afford Highland Park or North Dallas,” reporter Martha McIntyre says in the clip.
The home that Mike Muncy and his wife, who are featured in the clip, bought still stands at 6214 Bryan Parkway. The Muncys’ originally purchased the vacant house for $22,000 and renovated it.
“By the time Mike is finished [with renovations], he’ll have a 10-room home for $32,000,” McIntyre says.
