For a serious taste bud workout, visit the second annual Taste of East Dallas Aug. 24 from 5-10 p.m. at the Tower Building in Fair park.

The food festival, sponsored by the East Dallas Chamber of Commerce, features more than 30 neighborhood restaurants, offering everything from Mexican to barbecue to health food. Each restaurant will provide samples of its signature dishes, says Tim Parrent, a chamber director and event organizer.

The event also features clowns, games, and face-painting for children.

Last year, more than 1,000 people attended, and more than 2,000 are expected this year, says Parrent, an account executive at Mrs.Baird’s Bread. Hours are extended this year to allow for more visitors, he says.

“It’s very lively and colorful,” Parrent said. “We have everything from food and frozen drinks to coffee and dessert. We will provide an eclectic mix.”

Parrent says one plus for the festival is that it’s in an air-conditioned building. It’s also a chance to promote our neighborhood, he says.

“It’s a way for people in Dallas area to get to know what East Dallas is,” he says. “The chamber is more than just business. The chamber’s goal is to promote the East Dallas community.”

Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children, and proceeds benefit the chamber and Friends of Fair Park,a group dedicated to preserving this city resource.
