I really like Steve Blow. I really do. When I worked at the Morning News many years ago as a kid just out of college, he was unfailingly nice to me when he didn’t have to be. And generally, I like his writing. So hopefully he won’t take this personally, but today’s column "Every kid deserves an excellent teacher" is just puzzling. Steve starts off talking about DISD’s reception honoring top teachers from each of its 225 campuses (that takes three paragraphs, and he congratulates them with one sentence). And then he says: "But enough about them. Now let’s talk about bad teachers." And so he does, in general terminology, the rest of the column. It’s disappointing that, since he went to the reception, he couldn’t have dedicated the rest of the column to talking about a few of the really good teachers, rather than kissing them all off with one sentence and then talking about bad teachers; that’s something he could easily have done tomorrow, while giving the good ones their due today. Coupled with the recent Trinity column, basically trashing the petition drive and concluding "let’s just get on with it", I’m getting worried about Steve…
