Neighbor Kat Warwick rocks. For your entertainment and education during the coronavirus pandemic, she’s carving stone in her front yard, just like Renaissance sculptors Michelangelo and Donatello.

The stone carving instructor at the Creative Arts Center of Dallas is eschewing power tools like pneumatic hammers and diamond-blade saws and will carve with hand tools using historic methods.

“I am currently furloughed from teaching because, well, art class is really not essential right now,” Warwick said on Nextdoor. “That’s great news for my neighborhood! If you have children who need a new visual learning experience, I will be carving stone in my front yard.”

Warwick plans to start with a small sculpture carved from materials she has in stock until she can get a large block of limestone.

She will work from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday clearing and leveling a spot for her carving table outside her home at 6004 Vickery Blvd. She will work most days at those times, weather permitting.

Each day she carves, she will write interesting facts about carving techniques and the history of carving stone sculptures on a white board in her yard. Neighbors are free to watch, ask questions and take pictures. The only requirement is to observe social distancing guidelines.

“It will be a slow process, so each day you walk by, you may or may not see much progress,” she said. “If you take a picture every day, those pictures will show the progress.”

Warwick accepts monetary contribution but asks those who are struggling financially to keep their money for their families.

“So many community members have pulled together to help each other out,” Warwick said. “This is what I can do, and I’m glad to do it.”
