For more than a year and a half, we’ve been hearing about Austin-based coffee shop Houndstooth opening a location in the neighborhood. First, Houndstooth announced it was opening a location at the corner of Skillman and Oram, but then some “unexpected issues” came up, which forced owner Sean Henry to find a new place for his java joint. After that, we heard rumors of it opening at various other places around East Dallas (including a mention or two about Greenville), before Houndstooth finally announced that it was taking over the space on Henderson The Pearl Cup once occupied. Soon after the announcement in December, we chatted with Henry about his plans for the location and he told us the space would have a “modern feel.” Six months later, all the anticipation is coming to a close. Houndstooth is finally opening on Thursday, Aug. 14.

The location is centered around the concept of “clean lines and open space,” according to a press release. The design mixes and matches some of the original features of the building with newer elements, such as a slick new bar and plenty of stainless steel appliances. Bright turquoise seating offsets all the neutral colors, and the beehive-shaped lighting adds an entirely different element to the space.

Houndstooth is a part of what’s called the “third wave coffee movement,” which Henry describes as being “a loose term for people paying attention to where the beans come from and the craft of being a barista.”

“We get lumped into that movement, but at the same time, we’re just trying to serve good coffee; it’s not necessarily tied to any specific style,” he continues. “We just really pay attention to where our beans come from and put a lot of time and effort into training our baristas.”

This will be the third Houndstooth location, but the first location in Dallas. It will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.
