Firefighters were assigned to the fire at the Serenity Apartments, located at 3305 Dilido Road, around 6:30 p.m.

Fire investigators determined that the fire resulted from an improperly discarded cigarette, according to the DFR public information officer.

When they got there, they saw smoke coming from the second floor of the three-story building. That led them to upgrade the response to a structure fire working, and a second alarm was dispatched. But the fire worsened, and eventually DFR issued a five-alarm response and sent 120 firefighters.

No residents were reported to be injured, but two firefighters experienced non-life-threatening injuries. One of them was released from the hospital the night of the fire, and the other one stayed overnight for observation but was released the next morning.

Four dozen residents were transferred to the Samuell Grand Recreation Center, three were taken to hospitals for pre-existing medical conditions, and the rest of the 68 total residents were picked up by their families.
