Powell

If your family is coming into town and you’re looking for something to do this week, this is the last few days to see the art exhibit at Lakewood Library by Texas artist Guinn Powell, who lives in Junius Heights neighborhood. The exhibit, “Imagine: A Retrospective of Artwork,” features 21 pieces by Powell, including works from his Cotton Field series. During the meet-and-greet earlier this month, we snagged Powell to ask a couple of off-the-cuff questions.

Which part of the exhibit do you consider to be the highlight?

The thing that has really resonated with people who come to see the show is my Cotton Field series. It gets a lot of attention.

What’s the story behind that series for you?

I grew up in East Texas. When I was younger, I used to pick cotton. Me and my friends, we’d do it for fun. In the summertime kids need something to do, so we’d go out and pick cotton. There were cotton fields all over everywhere, before everything became automated with the machines, people used to pick cotton with their hands.

What do you see for the future of your artistic journey?

I’m trying to make a departure from this into some other area — maybe more impressionist or abstract.

Lakewood Library is located at 6121 Worth. Call 214.670.1376 or go to dallaslibrary2.org for more. The exhibit is free.
