Here’s a roundup of some interesting school news bites you might need to know for the upcoming week:

  • Applications to transfer into one of Woodrow’s four college prep academies are available to students outside Woodrow’s attendance zone. STEM, CAPA and BEF are offered in addition to IB, AP and dual credit classes. Click here for more.
  • Magnet school applications are available online for interested parents. Go to the Dallas ISD website, and hover over “parents/students” and then click the “parents & students” on the pop-up menu. Scroll down to find “District Programs,” and click on the title “Magnet Program.” On the left, click the plus sign for the bullet labeled “Magnet Application Process and Forms.” Under this heading is all the information parents need read to research the procedure for applying to DISD Magnet School. Click on “Magnet Application Forms” to find the application you need. Print this application from the ADOBE PDF file, and fill it out. Deadline for submission is Jan. 31. Give the completed applications to the school to which you are applying.
  • Career Day is coming up for Lakewood Elementary on Jan. 30 and 31, and they need some potential speakers to volunteer. Speakers will visit two classes for 30 minutes each. Email Lydia Wright at lydiawright@dallas.org.
  • Lakewood Elementary is asking for more volunteers for third grade and fourth grade. Also, volunteers who worked at Lakewood Elementary within the last six-week cycle need to turn in their hours. Email them to: volunteer@lakewoodelementary.net.
  • For Stonewall parents who need to sign up for the DISD Parent Portal, Stonewall will be open Wednesday, Jan. 15, and Thursday, Jan. 16 during drop-off and pick-up for parents to register for Parent Portal. Registration will take place in the SJ Library from 7:45 a.m.-8:30 a.m. and from 2:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. both days. Remember to bring a valid ID or Driver’s License.
  • Mark your calendars. Hexter Elementary will host its annual Silent Auction on Saturday, Feb. 8, which includes an adults-only evening, with music, food, silent and live auction. For questions on donations, contact Nancy Koen, nancymkoen@gmail.com.
