Possible scams reported in the Lakewood area last week, according to a crime watch e-alert.

One Lakewood resident received a call from someone claiming to be a UPS delivery person. The caller wanted to confirm the resident’s address and told them he had a certified check to deliver and he wanted to know if anyone would be home that afternoon. When the resident asked whom the check was from, the caller said they won a sweepstakes through his company. This understandably caused the homeowner great concern. (These days, anything that involves a sweepstakes I didn’t enter screams, “scam”.)

Another Lakewood resident reported two men in the neighborhood who said they were selling AT&T. The homeowner doubted salespeople would be out at the time because it was after dark and pouring rain. He tried to call AT&T to inquire as to whether these salespeople were legit, but had trouble getting in touch with anyone who could help. (Can’t get a human on the phone at AT&T? Sounds right.)
