If you’re looking for a quick bite of great Italian food for lunch or dinner, or just an order of pizza to-go, there isn’t a better spot in Lakewood than Roma Pizza & Pasta on the southeast corner of Mockingbird and Abrams (in the former Popeye’s Chicken location).

This authentic Italian restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere, and mouth-watering cuisine, and the whole family (kids are especially welcome!) can enjoy a slice of probably the largest pizza available in Dallas, as well as a full menu of mouth-watering Italian favorites.

Roma’s offers sensational New York-style Sicilian and Neapolitan pizzas, both made fresh to your specifications. The Sicilian pizza has an extra-thick crust and is topped with a special sauce made with fresh tomatoes from a secret Italian recipe the chef politely declined to reveal. Pizza is available by the oversized slice for $1.50.

But pizza is only the beginning: The menu offers an impressive selection of Italian dishes, including wonderful lasagna and manicotti, Italian sandwiches and salads, and special Italian calzone – all for unbeatable prices.

Take the calzone, for example: It’s made with ricotta and mozzarella cheese (and your choice of sausage or ham). And after placing your order, you can wait in the comfortable dining area or watch while the chefs prepare your meal right behind the counter.

For my calzone, the chef piled a mound of cheese on freshly made dough, brushed a mixture of egg on top to give it a “shine”, he explained, and slid it into the oven. Minutes later, Roma’s friendly staff brought the meal to my table, piping hot and tasty.

The restaurant is owned by Eddie Asani, and his brother, Victor, who moved from Italy to New York 25 years ago and began cooking Italian food “just like mama used to make”. Later, they moved their business to New Jersey and then Dallas.

The brothers opened Café Ravena and Roma Express, both located Downtown on Main Street, and their success inspired the opening of Roma’s in Lakewood.

“This is a family neighborhood,” Eddie says in an Italian-spiced accent. “I want people to come in and feel as if they’re at home.”
