Bikes weren’t even invented in 1601 when “Hamlet” first appeared on stage.

It is so much better to be modern than Elizabethan.

Bike Friendly Knox-Henderson is organizing a group ride to the Shakespeare Dallas performance of “Hamlet” at the Samuell-Grand Amphitheater Wednesday, Sept. 21. Meet at Sunflower Market at 7 p.m., and the group will ride at 7:15.

Even if you don’t want to ride bikes, it’s good to know that Shakespeare in the park is free on Wednesdays, with a $10 requested donation.

As we mentioned before, this production of “Hamlet” is set in post-World War II Denmark. Reworking classic plays has become a hot topic in the theater world. Check out this recent Washington Post story on the matter.

I mentioned this bike ride to a friend, who was not at all interested: “You know, it’s Shakespeare,” he said, as if that explained it. Sigh. “Hamlet” has fighting, sex, insanity, suicide, murder, ghosts. It never gets old.

One of the best stories in the world about “Hamlet” is a 2002 episode of “This American Life” titled “Act V”. Writer Jack Hitt reports a story from the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center, whose inmates produced the play. It is amazingly insightful.
