Lake House's back patio

Lake House’s back patio

Lakewood can feel like a ghost town during summer months, with families getting away to their lake houses. If you’re not one of the fortunate few or if you can’t break away as often as you’d like, Lake House Bar & Grill is ready to be your home-away-from-home.

Lakewood resident John Schmidt opened the place Super Bowl Sunday of 2013 on Northwest Highway at Lawther near White Rock Lake. You’ll have to use a little imagination (the lake’s edge hasn’t reached all the way to Northwest Highway in more than 50 years), but the joint gives off a heavy lakeside vibe with rolling garage doors kept open on pretty days and soft evenings, misted front and back patios, and fishing tackle vignettes in cozy corners. Sports plays on big screen TVs at the center bar, and the 3-7 weekday happy hour keeps regulars coming in to high-five their neighbor (try their signature Southern Slipper, a specialty bourbon infused with pecan, honey and vanilla).

The full menu is viewable here, but appetizers like Pulled Pork Nachos and the Shrimp and Crab Martini are matched only by the feel-good Mac’ N Cheese. The Spinach Salad and Shrimp & Avocado Salad keep things light, as do the Baja Fish Tacos and wide variety of flatbreads. Burgers and sandwiches are crowd pleasers, of course, but the real treat is the Fish of the Day, cooked fresh and served with vegetables of the season and their signature chunky tartar sauce.

Lake House doesn’t serve lunch on weekdays, but Sunday brunch is where they really shine. Migas, French Toast and the Lake House Omelette put the place on the map for the after-church crowd, but White Rock fitness buffs prefer the House-Made Oatmeal, Fresh Fruit & Berries and Breakfast Tacos. Dogs are welcome on the patio, and the relaxed environment says, “come on in, the water’s fine.”

Lake House Bar and Grill, located at 7510 E. Northwest Highway, is open from 3 p.m. to midnight Mon.-Wed., 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday and Friday. They’re open 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
