During a community meeting on Thursday night, Stonewall Jackson Elementary’s renaming committee recommended the new name after hours of debate.

The school resides on Mockingbird Lane, and Mockingbird is also the state bird of Texas. At the meeting, several community members gave further justification for the new name. According to a Facebook post from parent Lauren Silva Laughlin who was in support of the new name, a parent described how Mockingbirds speak many languages, much like the 20 languages spoke in the homes of the students at the school. Laughlin says her views may not represent the entire committee.

The name will go before the Dallas ISD trustees in February, after the board passed a policy requiring four schools named for Confederate Generals to have new names by then. Representatives from Robert E. Lee Elementary suggested the name Geneva Heights Elementary, after the plat where the school sits, back in September.
