As we ease into the holiday weekend, remember “not everyone considers the holidays a time to celebrate, but rather an opportunity to commit a crime,” says the Dallas Police Department.

If you want to keep your Christmas presents this year, here are some tips from our boys in blue:

  • Don’t leave packages visible in your car. Place all valuables in the trunk of your vehicle. Don’t give thieves a reason to break into your car.
  • After you open your presents, don’t pile up empty gift boxes from your new laptop computer, DVD player, stereo receiver etc. on the street for trash pickup. Burglars appreciate knowing that you have expensive gifts inside for them to steal. Break boxes down or cut them up to conceal the items better. After a lucrative burglary, the chances of being burglarized again increase. Thieves may return to steal the new replacement products.
  • Keep windows secure and install a secondary blocking device on all accessible windows, including upper story windows. Also, use a secondary locking device on all sliding glass doors.
  • Anyone considering hiring an alarm company or an alarm installer should check to see if they are licensed in Texas as required by Law. To check to see if an alarm company is licensed in Texas, click here.
