The Dallas Police Department is involved in an ongoing investigation into the facility where a compromised IV bag was found, a public information officer with the department said.
Last week, Baylor Scott & White Surgicare North Dallas contacted the police department and paused operations when it found evidence of an IV bag that “appeared to have been compromised,” Baylor Scott & White told The Dallas Morning News. Baylor Scott & White did not say how the IV bag had been compromised.
Lakewood resident and anesthesiologist Melanie Kaspar worked at the facility, located on Coit Road. Kaspar died in June at age 55.
Originally, the cause of death was thought to be a heart attack, but the medical examiner later determined that Kaspar died from toxic effects of bupivacaine, WFAA reports.
Bupivacaine is a local anesthetic used to numb a part of the body during or after surgery and other procedures.
The day she died, Kaspar administered to herself an IV she acquired from the surgery center, according to WFAA.
