Tuesday morning during rush hour — a little before 9 — an accident occurred on southbound Loop 12 near Interstate 30. It should have been a minor wreck sans injuries.

However, when one of the men involved in the crash exited his car and attempted to cross the road, another commuter struck and killed him.

Police say the driver who hit the deceased (and was not involved in the initial accident) remained at the scene and cooperated with police. The yet-unidentified man died at the scene, police say, per DFW scanner.

The road shut down for a while following the incident but reopened later today.

Dallas has the highest rate of pedestrian deaths among the 20 largest cities in the U.S., with 4.91 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 people in 2020, according to a 2022 report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Dallas has implemented measures to increase pedestrian safety following a 2022 audit. However, safety measures presumably would not have prevented today’s tragedy.
