It was 1954 when the city first flipped the switch on a new set of streetlights for Live Oak, part of a citywide effort from 1949-68 to light up the dark corners of Dallas for added safety. The photo above, from the Dallas City Archives, taken at the corner of Haskell, shows the bright new mercury-vapor streetlights on 28-foot poles. Below, you can see the block hasn’t changed too much today, although in 2008 the city launched efforts to replace all of the antiquated mercury lights.
