My column in this month’s magazine talks about my experience trying to help a panhandler in a fast-food restaurant. Things didn’t work out as I hoped when I offered to help.
A reader thought about what I wrote and sent along his own panhandling story:
“I was at 7-Eleven pumping gas. A bedraggled guy walks by. Does not say a word but shuffles over to the trash bin, rifles through and moves on to the next one, not asking a question. As I drove off, I stopped, got out of the car, handed him a few bucks and thanked him for not expecting or asking for a handout. He nodded and smiled.”
