Police were first on the scene and helped five people escape. When firefighters arrived, they found an unresponsive woman in the attic, which had been converted into a living space, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said.

The woman, who has not been identified, suffered burns and was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, he said.

Initial reports indicated the roof of the home was on fire, and firefighters extinguished the flames in about an hour.

The cause of the blaze is still undetermined.
