The mural pays homage to the city’s blues roots while adding Dallas Mavericks pride. The painting features Leon Bridges, Grammy Award-winning soul singer and Fort Worth native wearing the Dallas Mavericks City Edition jersey, which Biggers helped design.

The mural itself features Leon as well as other culturally significant artists whose roots are tied to Deep Ellum, Biggers said in an interview with FOX 4.

I knew I wanted to feature Leon as the super star that he is as well as the musical artists that came before him that have roots in Deep Ellum,” Biggers said in an email. “I wanted the colors of the mural to mirror the colors in the uniform, and wanted the blue hues to work dually as a nod to the “Blues” music genre that has so many ties to Deep Ellum. The circle in the background is a call back to the dots I use in my typical works, as well as the “full circle” moment of Leon once busking in the streets of Deep Ellum to now being immortalized in mural form on those same Deep Ellum walls.”

The First Fridays event will begin at 5 p.m. and consists of live music, live paintings and photo booths at the Deep Ellum Plaza. This event will be open to the public welcoming all ages at no charge.
