Neighborhood contractor Metro Remodeling and Construction Inc. recently won a national award for renovating a house on the shore of White Rock Lake.

Metro Remodeling was chosen Contractor of the Year for 1995 by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry for a seven-month job on the Victorian house at 4415 W. Lawther, built in the early 1900’s.

“It’s kind of like the album of the year award at the Grammy’s,” says Bob Curry, Metro’s sales manager. “It’s very hard to get.”

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house originally was occupied by Morris Levy, the founder of Levy Plumbing, and his daughter, Orien Woolf, a former member of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens’ board of directors.

Now, Woolf’s daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Julien Devereux, live in the house with their two daughters, Andrea and Michelle.

“It’s just a gorgeous house now,” Barbara says. “It’s exactly what we’ve always wanted. Before, it was old and crumbling.”

The remodeling began in February 1994 and was finished in August. Renovations included expanding the dining room and adding a large verandah, along with a steel turret. Metro added about 1,800 square feet to the house, Curry says.

“We completely rebuilt the existing house,” Curry says.

The national chapter of NARI awarded Metro “Contractor of the Year” in the category of large remodeling projects, which are projects costing more than $25,000.

Metro Remodeling also was named Remodeler of the Year by the Dallas NARI chapter in 1994.
