Mount Vernon, the replica of George Washington’s Virginia estate, has been on and off the market since 2016. But 2020 might be the year it finally sells.

Owner John Amend and his family have made it a goal to sell the property this year, Realtor Allie Beth Allman told the Dallas Morning News.

Many interested buyers have made offers, but the family has been reluctant to sell, she said. It is listed at $18.5 million.

“The kids are just now at the age that they really enjoy it, and they spend a lot of time over there,” the Realtor told the Morning News. “It’s hard to give that up when your grandkids are saying, ‘Oh, don’t sell.'”

The Amends are just the second family to live in the iconic home, built in 1930 by Thomas Y. Pickett. In 1938, oil tycoon H.L. Hunt moved in and lived there for 60 years.

The property at 4009 W. Lawther Drive boasts five bedrooms, six and a half bathrooms and a library. The owners have also added a few modern upgrades that would make Washington swoon. Additions include a game room, a pool, a putting green, a 16-car garage and a four-lane bowling alley in a 1950s-style diner.

Yet much of the original structure, including wood floors, doors, marble fireplaces and hearths, remain.

The estate sits on 10 acres overlooking a picturesque view of White Rock Lake.
