Ugly Christmas sweaters are usually reserved for holiday parties and other gatherings.
But starting today, wearing one in public can pay off.
As part of its second-annual wabi-sabi ugly sweater promotion, anyone wearing an ugly Christmas sweater will get a free bowl of udon with any udon purchase at Marugame Udon.
Wabi-sabi is a Japanese idea referencing the acceptance of transience and imperfection — asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, modesty and an appreciation of natural objects are included.
“Every bowl of udon at Marugame is handmade to order right in front of the guests, and the craft and artistry makes us think about the concept of wabi-sabi,” Alonzo Cudd, the restaurant’s head of marketing, said in a news release.
There’s another promotion going on at the restaurant. Anyone who buys $25 or more in gift cards until Dec. 31 will receive a certificate good for one free bowl of udon, valid through Jan. 31, 2022.
Marugame, which was founded in Kakogawa City, Japan, in 2000, has more than 1,000 locations in 13 countries.
The one in our neighborhood is located at 5500 Greenville Ave. It opened earlier this year.
