Stonewall Jackson Elementary principal, Melanie Mans, cut the ribbon on the school’s $5.8 million addition Feb. 13. The two-story building includes 12 classrooms and more than 18,000 square feet. The project was funded by the Bridge Plan, money set aside by the Dallas Independent School District’s board to renovate and update more than a dozen campuses.
With funding from the Bridge Plan (money provided between bond elections), the added space includes a conference room, science labs, new furniture, touch screens and other technology.
State Rep. Morgan Meyer, Dallas ISD Trustee Dustin Marshall, a representative from U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions’ office and other Dallas ISD officials attended the ribbon cutting, which also included a performance from the elementary choir.
Marshall said he hopes the addition “keeps making Stonewall Jackson the great place it is to learn.”
Dallas ISD Chief of School Leadership Stephanie Elizalde said that while it is great to have quality facilities, it is the Stonewall community that makes the school special. “It really isn’t a building,” she said. “It’s people like you.”
Stonewall Jackson Elementary, located at Matilda and Mockingbird in East Dallas, is set to become Mockingbird Elementary after the Dallas ISD School Board voted to change the names of four schools named after Confederate generals.
