Lee and Stonewall elementary officially receive new names

Last night, the Dallas ISD trustees voted unanimously to remove the Confederate names from Lee and Stonewall Elementary.

On July 1, Lee Elementary will become Geneva Heights Elementary, named after the plat where the school sits. Stonewall Jackson Elementary will be Mockingbird Elementary, named for the school’s street.

The school communities provided the new names through a process that involved administration, community members and parents and submitted them to the board, who voted on Thursday.

The schools will operate under the new names in the next school year.

“Last night our school district took massive strides towards a recognition of past transgressions while laying a path forward for remediation,” Trustee Miguel Solis wrote on Twitter. “One of my proudest moments serving.”
