Lakewood Elementary opened its addition Tuesday morning with principal Katie Wilke cutting the ribbon on the 52,500-square-foot structure.
The new building increases the capacity of the school from 552 to around 1,000. It includes a new library and cafeteria and was funded by a combination of support from Lakewood Elementary Education Fund and $12.6 million in Dallas ISD funding.
The added room will help accommodate a school that attracts more neighborhood families each year. Â The Lakewood Elementary attendance zone had 1,884 elementary school-aged children last year. About 700 of those attend private school.
